Title: The New Sky
Fandom: Final Fantasy V
Characters: Krile, Bartz
Rating: G
Summary: Krile and Bartz mull over the change in the worlds.
Author's Note: Just some fluff.
Krile lay on her back outside of the tent, watching the dark blue clouds drift across the stars. She shut one eye, drawing invisible lines from one point to another with her finger in random patterns. The sky looked so... so empty like this, dark and lonely, stretching out forever and ever. Was that the Void? The thing that had been sealed when the world was split in two and contained between them... maybe what she was looking at was its heart. This was what Exdeath wanted to turn it all into...
There was a rustle of grass and a huff as Bartz flopped down next to her, head on his hands. Krile immediately dropped her arm to give him a poke in the ribs, giggling as he yelped and twisted away. "Don't do that!"
"You deserved it."
"...For what?!" He propped himself on one elbow, the look of affronted bafflement on his face only just visible. She just hummed, swinging her feet back and forth. "Sometimes I really wonder about you," he muttered. But he still laid back down rather than leaving. Lifting her hand up again, Krile traced a few more stars before sighing and letting it fall back onto the grass. That got her an elbow nudge from Bartz. "Something on your mind?"
"It's so dark now," she said after a moment of trying to put her finger on just what it was that was bothering her. "Back home, your world used to shine at night, all this blue-green light. Sometimes it was just as bright as day." A thought struck her. "What about yours? Did our world shine for you?"
"Yeah, it did," said Bartz. "I always used to wonder about what was up there--you know, if there were people and chocobos living there like us. I guess you did too, huh?"
Krile shut her eyes. "Grandpa... he used to tell me stories. About the people and all the different towns he saw while he was here. I always thought it sounded like a beautiful place."
"Mm. That makes sense." And then it was quiet for a while. Krile didn't mind--she let the memory of those stories fade back into her mind, the thought of Grandpa settling back down. One day, maybe, she'd be able to think about him without remembering the Guardian Tree too. She opened her eyes and stared back up at the stars as she waited for that picture to go away, listening to the steady sound of Bartz's breathing. Maybe it had been a mistake to bring him up, but then, how couldn't she? Everything she'd done and seen had Grandpa in it. He'd always been there. He still is here, she reminded herself, moving her hand over her jacket, feeling the crystal shards sewn into pockets there. She knew that; she'd heard and felt him afterwards, urging them onward. Not gone, not entirely. But it hurt, all the same.
Strange, dark sky. Even though this was how the world was supposed to be, she still had a hard time believing it.
"You know..." said Bartz, and Krile turned her head to look. Now his arm was up, doing the same thing she'd been doing. "I never knew there were this many stars out there."
"I guess our planets were too bright to see all of them."
"Yeah... it's strange," he said. "There's hardly any space between them now. It's like a whole sea of them from one end to the other."
Krile blinked and looked back up. She hadn't thought about it like that. "Yeah...."
"I'm glad we're able to see it now. It's really..." He shook his head, opening and shutting his mouth a few times. "...something."
That earned him another poke, but a far less sharp one this time. It was true, wasn't it? "Sure is."
